Camden Junior School

Able, Gifted and Talented Policy

Camden Junior School values all children equally, no matter what their ability. It aims to give every child the support and opportunity to succeed. Planning across the curriculum enables children to be challenged through questioning and interactive and reflective lessons.

Definitions

It is more likely that a child will be outstanding in one or a combination of things than in everything.

Howard Gardner originally proposed seven different forms of human intelligence. The list has been extended to at least twelve. He proposes that each child possesses each of these intelligences to some degree, therefore giving a unique intelligence profile for an individual.

Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences are:

Factual

Logical and mathematical

Linguistic

Visual/Spatial

Musical

Practical

Physical/Kinaesthetic

Common sense

Interpersonal (includes leadership)

Existential

Creative

Metacognitive (intrapersonal)

The original seven forms are highlighted in bold.

Identification

A register has been drawn up through teacher identification related to the above characteristics. Target Tracker is also used to identify the top 20% of each class. This is updated twice a year.

General Principles of good provision

The needs of the more able should be met as part of the normal differentiated classroom provision. The exceptionally able may need additional classroom provision and/or an individually tailored programme of work. Extra provision is signposted for areas we cannot provide for.

Creating a school climate which encourages the more able to achieve.

Outstanding work in both academic work and all other areas must be given the same degree of reward and recognition.
