Music at Camden Junior School

Music is taught in the school in accordance with the National Curriculum Orders. The school aims, among other things, to develop children spiritually, morally, socially and culturally. At Camden Junior School, we see music education as an important curriculum area and a significant contribution to pupil development. It is the aim of the music curriculum to send out from the school children who enjoy music and are confident that they have some vocal and instrumental skills and some general musical knowledge and understanding.

The National Curriculum Music 2000 describes the knowledge, skills and understanding contained in the programmes of study as the development of 4 basic elements: performing, composing, listening and appraising.

Development and progression of these basic elements is made in the following

areas:

* Performing skills: controlling sounds through singing and playing;

* Composing skills: creating and developing musical ideas;

* Listening and applying knowledge and understanding; and

* Appraising skills: responding and reviewing,

The 4 elements are interlinked and should be taught with language, ICT and health & safety aspects in mind.

Teaching and Learning Music

The school uses the LCP Music Resource file as the basis for its scheme of work. The LCP Resource file is based around the QCA Music Schemes of Work. It provides additional details, activities, accompaniments and recordings to

support teachers in using the QCA unit and implementing the requirements of

the revised NC Music 2000. Each year group is provided with an overall timetable to show what is to be taught and when.

In addition, each year group receives descant recorder tuition, using the Recorder Magic series. Years 3 and 4 will receive recorder tuition for a term and years 5 and 6 will receive tuition for half a term. Children are encouraged to buy their own recorders, however the school has 30 descant recorders for those who do not.

Children are encouraged to take instrumental lessons arranged privately by their parents or through the school instrumental teaching scheme. We currently have on offer the piano, strings, guitar and woodwind peripatetic teachers. Children are encouraged to take part in one of the Sutton Schools' orchestras. A formal concert is given once a year for all those children who have instrumental lessons inside or outside school. There is also a choir club for children in years 5 and 6.

The Fairfield Halls Music Festival provides the opportunity for these children to give a formal performance to a wider audience. The choir also performs in the Christmas production and the formal concert held at school for instrumentalists.

Time Allocation

In Years 5 and 6, music should take up about 45 minutes of curriculum time per week. For Years 3 and 4, it should take up about 40 minutes per week. It should be noted that hymn practice is also included in some of this time.

Assessment and Recording and Reporting

Assessment in Music consists of three types: classroom observation, children's self-assessment and LCP end of unit assessments. Classroom observation is the most useful form. It enables teachers to observe the quality of children's work while they are performing. This can be used together with the end of unit assessments which assess children's progress. Children are encouraged to self-assess their own work in terms of progress.

Equal Opportunities

Teachers will ensure that all children are provided with equality of opportunity. Teachers will take account of children's gender, ethnicity, religion or social background when planning lessons to ensure that all are able to participate in the music curriculum. This will be done by using a range of activities and types of work, equipment and instruments.

Special Needs

Adjustments will be made for children who have specific educational needs. During the planning stage, teachers will either alter the task set or provide appropriate support during lessons to facilitate access to all activities. Specific children's needs will be provided for in line with the school's policy on SEN.

More Able Pupils

We will endeavour to recognise those pupils whose talent and performance in music is above that which is expected for their age. .

Teachers will plan suitably challenging work to maximise pupils' progression and development in music

ICT

The use of ICT in music is in the early stages of development. Opportunities for ICT are provided for in some of the LCP units. The purpose of using ICT in music is to enhance children's learning and should not replace other musical activities.. ICT is used in the following

four areas in relation to music:

             * Keyboards

* Tape recorders

* CD players

* Computer software.

Co-ordination and development

This document will be regularly updated and will take into account any future developments. The co-ordinator will also monitor and evaluate the teaching and resource material used in music to ensure effective learning.
