             The National Curriculum

   has two interdependent broad aims:

1.  The school curriculum should aim to provide opportunities

2. The school curriculum should aim to promote pupils’ spiritual, moral, social
    and cultural development

What is PSHE ?

PSHE and Citizenship is the planned provision for emotional and social development of children.
At key stage 2 children should learn to;
bulletdevelop confidence, responsibility and make the most of their abilities.
bulletprepare to play an active role as citizens.
bulletdevelop a healthier lifestyle.
bulletdevelop good relationships and respect the differences between people.

What do we do already?

At Camden the children have the opportunity to develop personally, socially and emotionally through designated PSHE time co-ordinated with existing curriculum subjects and extended activities such as health week.

By the end of key stage 2 most children:

bullet Investigate topical issues and problems using a range of sources,                  including the media, to find questions or information and advice.
bullet

Show understanding of some citizenship concepts eg                              rights, responsibilities, rules, right and wrong, fairness and values  e.g. honesty, tolerance, respect and concern for others

bullet

 Take part in simple discussions and debates on topical issues                that affect themselves and others, and talk and write about their

         opinions explaining their views.
bullet Ask and respond to questions and listen to the views of others.
bullet Understand that people may have different views on issues and use        imagination to understand other people’s experiences.
bullet Take part responsibly in group class and school activities such as                  resolving differences by exploring alternatives and making choices.
bulletMeet and talk with different adults from the community.
bullet Begin to realise that their actions affect themselves and others                    around them.

A recent audit of what each year group do already, with respect to citizenship, has shown that through the curriculum and other areas of daily life at the school, each child will have had opportunities to develop many of the areas described in the guidelines.

This year?

Staff have had training from ‘specialists’ from the borough on circle time, which has been followed up by monitoring and the opportunity to observe other teachers.
Circle time is now part of the weekly timetable.
Resources to support staff with circle time have been purchased from this year’s allocation.
Health week.
PSHE Coordinator training.

Policy review to take place this month.

Circle time.

Many primary schools use the method regularly and it is starting to be introduced into secondary schools. There is an increasing awareness of its benefits as part of a whole school policy aimed at creating a positive ethos and dealing more effectively with problems such as bullying.

What is the purpose of circle time?

bulletto build up group rapport and individuals' self-esteem;
bulletto identify, as a class, the needs and strengths of all members;
bulletoffer solutions, care support and strategies to the individual or group when a problem such as bullying arises;
bulletto solve disputes through group discussion;
bulletto accelerate a whole school approach to policy development in matters such as behaviour management and school rules.

Participation.
The government has signed up to the UN Convention on the rights of the child (UNCRC) of which article 12 states that children should be given opportunities to express their views on decisions that affect their lives.’

Next year ?

bulletSchool/class council.

bulletElection of house captains.
