TEACHING AND LEARNING POLICY

The principal aim at this school is to help each pupil develop:

*  a lively, enquiring mind and a willingness to learn with the ability to question and to argue rationally and to think for him/herself;

*  qualities of individuality, imagination and sensitivity;

*  the ability to work hard and to succeed in tasks, to work independently and with others and to have an appreciation of human achievement and endeavour;

*  a sense of respect, self confidence and self reliance, and an awareness and a sensitivity to the needs of others;

*  the knowledge skills and practical abilities he/she would need throughout life, at work and at play, in an ever changing world;

* a reasoned set of personal attitudes, values and beliefs, an understanding of the world and his/her place in it and a respect for the religions and moral values of others irrespective of their sex, colour, race or ethnic origin;

*  a respect for property and possessions, both his/her own and other people’s.

 

Teaching and Learning is the foundation of school life.

Teaching and Learning is monitored through the Monitoring and Evaluation Policy and the Assessment Policy.

In this school all pupils are entitled to access to the highest quality of teaching and learning;

to lessons where there are clear learning objectives which are shared with the class

 

to regular marking of work, setting of homework, keeping of records and assessments

to a calm and orderly learning environment

to a tidy, organised working environment in classrooms and throughout the school; where adults present as positive role models

 

to a high quality of appropriate relevant displays

In this school a good teacher …..

communicates effectively with everyone, pupils, staff and parents

 

demonstrates and engenders enthusiasm for learning

marks work with the children where possible or feeds back quietly

In this school a good classroom has ……

a tidy, clean environment which the children are involved in maintaining, i.e. monitor system

 

appropriate furniture for the age and size of the children

 

adequate heating, lighting and blinds; is in good decorative order

 

interactive displays for a various areas of the curriculum

 

examples of the best of the children’s’ work on display

 

clearly labelled and easily accessible resources

 

a variety of working areas (if space allows) – IT, book corner, writing area, sink

 

class rules (which are devised and agreed in consultation with the children)

A partnership is critical to effective learning:

The learner needs:

 

*  an expectation of success

*  the confidence to take risks and make mistakes

*  the willingness to share and engage

*  the confidence to ask for help

*  an acceptance of the need to readjust

 

 

The teacher needs:

 

*  the respect for and interest in the learners language, culture, thought and intentions

*  the ability to recognise growth points, strengths and potential

*  the appreciation that mistakes are necessary to learning

*  the confidence to match these to the learners interests and direction

(i.e. to stimulate and to challenge)
