In Spring 2006 Robin Hood Junior School's Eco Team invited Sutton's Centre for Environmental Initiatives to speak to the whole school about the importance of recycling to our planet. We learnt that the landfill sites in the UK are almost full and people were simply 'using too much, wasting too much and not recycling enough'.

In Europe 3,500 bins of rubbish are thrown away every minute!

Waste produced in the UK in 1 hour would fill the Albert Hall!

Household waste in the UK has risen to over 500kg per person per year and to continue living the way we are, we would need 3 planets!!

The Eco Team decided that Robin Hood Junior School should do more to encourage recycling and reduce waste in our school community. We joined the 'Recycling Champions' scheme set up by the CEI (now Ecolocal) and appointed Eco Team members to head these new initiatives....

"We sort the donations during our lunch break and record our sack totals on our target chart."

We set ourselves a target for the school year of 44 sacks of textiles and 10 sacks of shoes.

In our first full school year we collected 64 sacks of textiles and 11 sacks of shoes.

Thank you to all the parents and friends who donated old clothes and shoes. With the credits we earned we were able to afford the water butts that our Allotment Club and Water Team needed for our gardens.

Manufacturing 1 tonne of recycled paper results in 74% less air pollution and 43% less water pollution compared to the manufacture of paper using new wood pulp.

Please help protect the environment by buying recycled paper products whenever possible.

We set ourselves a target of collecting 200 phones. We achieved this target and raised £300 for the school from collecting the phones.

At the end of last term we took the decision that this would be a project we would progress in September 2007. We have collected all cartridges used within the school and those brought in from outside the school throughout the past school year.
