St Cecilia was born in Rome, in the beginning of the third century. Gifted with wealth and beauty, Cecilia’s hand was sought after in marriage. She vowed to remain devoted to God, however her parents had different ideas and ordered to marry a non-catholic man named Valerian. Cecilia’s determination meant that Valerian soon became a follower of God.
St Cecilia has always been painted holding a viola or small organ. As a biographer once put it;
"Like any good Christian, Cecilia sang in her heart and sometimes with her voice. She has become a symbol of the Church's conviction that good music is an integral part of the liturgy, of greater value to the Church than any other art."
St Cecilia’s feast day is celebrated on November 22. At school we perform the St Cecilia’s Day Play to celebrate her life and love of God.
She is always in our thoughts and prayers.
